Lacey and I spent last weekend in Copan, Honduras, the southernmost of the ancient Mayan cities. Copan is known especially for its elaborate stone carving. It felt so appropriate to be there before Halloween!

A skull in one of the first Mayan stone carvings we saw at the museum in Copan, Honduras.

Ancient Mayan bat.

Perhaps the best-preserved ball court in the Mayan world.

Ruins.

Another figure.

Face.

Late day view from near the top of the ruins.

Another freaky face.

This one scared me the most.

Stelae scattered among the ruins.

Bird at the edge of the ball court.

Looks like he's trying to get out.

Another face.

Sometimes they come in rows.

One of my favorite things about the ruins; nature has taken over.

My favorite carving.

Detail.

Huge ceiba trees, holy to the Maya, have now taken over the ruins.

And more skulls.

A lovely facade.

Another gorgeous ceiba tree.

Stela close up in the afternoon sun.

Another great face.

Another skull.

Gorgeous view from near the top of the ruins, beneath a ceiba tree.

This one seems almost anguished.
